Audrie Pott – another victim raped and harassed

In a  story that is becoming all too common, Audrie Pott of San Jose California, was raped, photographed, harassed, and ultimately killed herself. Seven months later, 3 young men were arrested on charges of sexual battery.

Authorities arrested three 16-year-old boys Thursday on charges they sexually assaulted a 15-year-old who killed herself eight days after the attack. A family attorney said Audrie Pott was humiliated by online photos of the assault and posted on Facebook that her life was ruined, “worst day ever,” and hanged herself.

“The family has been trying to understand why their loving daughter would have taken her life at such a young age and to make sure that those responsible would be held accountable,” said family attorney Robert Allard.

“After an extensive investigation that we have conducted on behalf of the family, there is no doubt in our minds that the victim, then only 15 years old, was savagely assaulted by her fellow high school students while she lay on a bed completely unconscious,” said Allen.

If I were ever in a position to witness such a crime I like to think I would try to intervene physically. However, unless I was in that situation, I wouldn’t know fo0r sure, perhaps my courage would not match my ethics. Maybe I’m just old, but the idea of filming a crime and forwarding it anywhere other than the police would just never enter my mind. That I can be sure of.

Certainly, the behaviour is nothing new. People have always stood by while crimes were committed, the only recent change is the use of technology to instantly send videos and stills around the world.

Women are constantly bombarded with techniques to avoid being raped or otherwise assaulted. On the surface, these seem practical enough: avoid dangerous situations. In the short term, they can be somewhat effective. The downside of such campaigns is that the emphasis is entirely on the woman as potential victim and can leave the woman with additional guilt. Also, they provide no long term solutions.

To remove the sense of external and internal blame towards the victim, in the longer term, we must work to change societies attitudes towards sex and consent.

Fuck. Sometimes I get disgusted with some members of the human race.
