Almost a repeat of what happened in Steubenville, Ohio, only next door in Halifax. Oh, so similar. A young girl raped and bullied by the people in her school, only in an even more tragic ending, Angel took her own life.
So far, the police have been unable to garner enough evidence to charge anyone in the rape, and the bullying was too widespread to develop a case at all. Yesterday, Nova Scotia’s Justice Minister Ross Landry, while being careful in not interfering in an investigation, has asked for the police to have another look.
Landry stressed that bullying is a community issue.
“We can make laws, we can do all that kind of thing, that won’t change that issue,” he said. “This is about the basic human relationship and respect and the respect for privacy.”
Respect is the key word here, and the total lack of respect that the rapists and bullies had for Rehtaeh. Someone must know something, and we can only hope that they will develop some basic sense of right vs wrong and come forward. Victim blaming, slut shaming, and protecting rapists is no way to go through life.
