30,000 Pounds of Mashed Bananas

It happened in Seekonk, Mass rather than Scranton Pennsylvania, but Harry Chapin’s song turned out to be prescient.

The fiery crash occurred around 5:45 on a Sunday morning, when the truck tipped over and slid into the building hours before the restaurant would have been packed with brunch customers.

An investigation by state and local police later determined that the banana company improperly loaded the trailer by failing to put spacers between the pallets of product.

The company — Chiquita Fresh North America of Cincinnati, Ohio — was cited by authorities.

The driver, who was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence but escaped serious injury, was not cited for any traffic violations because police determined there was no evidence he was speeding or impaired.
