When science stories are written up in the media, they seem to be accompanied by n immense amount of hyperbole: amazing cures, baffled scientists, current thinking turned on its head. These are the types of things we read every day. If you take the time and effort to track down and actually read the original article, or at least the abstract, you will often discover a much more muted discussion.
Unfortunately, this is how it often works. The result is a distrust of science in general, leading people in the direction of pseudoscience and anti-science.
